Pravin Mahajan may move court for psychiatric tests
Mumbai, May 8: Pravin Mahajan, charged with murdering his elder brother and senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, is likely to move a superior court seeking his psychiatric examination.
Stating this here today, his counsel Nandkumar Rajurkar told UNI that he has not yet received clear instruction from his client but Pravin could move either a Sessions court or the Bombay High Court for seeking his psychiatric examination after a lower court had repeatedly turned down his appeal for the tests.
The maintained that Pravin was not mentally sound when he allegedly pumped in three bullets into Mahajan at the BJP leader's Worli home on April 22.
Mr Rajurkar said, after not taking cognizance of his oral submissions, Additional Metropolitan Magistrate R D Badge, on May 3, had rejected his plea for psychiatric examination.
He said the court turned down the plea when the prosecution informed that Pravin was being given a proper medical check-up as per the Supreme Court guidelines.
Pravin was examined by a team of doctors in the government-run J J hospital and Special Public Prosecutor Shrikant Bhatt had informed the court that he was mentally sound.
However, the defence had been contesting the police claim from the day Pravin had surrendered to the Worli police after allegedly commiting the crime on April 22.
Pravin, after remaining in police custody for 11 days, is presently in judicial custody till May 17. He is now lodged in the Arthur Road jail here.
