Nick Reiner was detained by officers at the scene. Authorities continued to examine the circumstances, while the national discussion quickly turned towards Trump’s reaction.

Trump used social media to claim that Rob Reiner’s outspoken criticism of him played a role in the tragedy. Trump wrote that Reiner supposedly suffered from "TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME," which, Trump said, drove people "CRAZY." The message contrasted with traditional presidential expressions of sympathy after violent deaths.

Republican figures reacted in different ways to Trump’s statement on Rob Reiner. Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie condemned the post as inappropriate and disrespectful. Massie asked why fellow Republicans and White House staff did not publicly challenge Trump and urged anyone to justify the comments about Reiner if they could.

Rob Reiner had long backed Democratic causes inside the film community and beyond. Reiner frequently promoted liberal campaigns and organised fundraisers. In a 2017 interview with Variety, Reiner described Trump as "mentally unfit" and "the single-most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States."

When Paul Pelosi, husband of Nancy Pelosi, suffered a serious assault in 2022, Trump mocked the incident. Former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis highlighted this contrast in reactions. Ellis wrote that Trump’s post about Rob Reiner was "NOT the appropriate response" and urged others with "decency" to denounce it. Ellis noted that the Right had unanimously criticised celebratory comments following Charlie Kirk’s killing.

Speaking at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service, Trump again focused on political enmity. Trump said, "I hate my opponent." Observers saw the remark as consistent with Trump’s wider campaign style, where sharp attacks on critics, including Rob Reiner, often overshadow calls for unity or restraint.
