Varanasi, Oct 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to his constituency Varanasi on Monday was cancelled on grounds of bad weather caused by a devastating cyclone that had hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Sunday.

However, according to a report in Daily Bhaskar, the prime minister's trip to Varanasi was cancelled because of a possible suicide attack. Assassins in the guise of husband and wife could have carried out the attack, the news report cited anonymous sources in the intelligence agency as saying. All authorities were informed about the possible attack, the report said citing sources.

The sources also said the attack could have been planned on the one which was carried out against former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.

Officially though, the impact of the powerful cyclone, Hudhud, which made a landfall in Vishakhapatnam on Sunday morning, was said to be the reason behind the cancellation ofd Modi's visit to Varanasi.

Varanasi and Allahabad, along with other parts of Uttar Pradesh witnessed heavy rain on Tuesday. Eighteen people were killed while property and crops suffered damage in the rainfall induced by Cyclone Hudhud.
