Wayanad Landslide: Army Building Temporary Bailey Bridge In Chooralmala

Rescue efforts in the Chooralmala-Mundakai landslide area have intensified for the third consecutive day. The completion of the Bailey Bridge, led by the Army, has enabled the transportation of more machinery and equipment, speeding up search operations. Major General VL Mathew informed OneIndia Malayalam, "The Bailey bridge construction will be completed by 12 noon."

"It is a bridge about 200 feet long. In the current situation, it is possible to complete the bridge construction by 12 noon. All vehicles that crossed the old bridge can also be brought through the new bridge. The army has special equipment for the search. But without the bridge, it is not possible to bring them to the other side. Once the bridge is in place, all equipment will be brought to Mundakkayi and Churalmal," Major General VL Mathew said.

The Bailey Bridge will remain until a new government-built bridge is constructed. Approximately 500 army personnel are involved in search operations across different areas, divided into six teams. So far, rescue operations have been conducted manually. With the bridge's completion, more machinery will be deployed.

This rescue mission is among the most challenging ones recently undertaken. It is unprecedented in recent times for so many individuals to be trapped under soil. The changing weather conditions have added to the difficulty of the operation.

The slight decrease in rainfall today has provided some relief to rescue teams. However, night-time operations have proven particularly challenging. Despite these difficulties, Major General VL Mathew assured that every effort would be made to rescue all trapped individuals.

"The army’s aim is to bring out the last person," he added. The commitment of the rescue teams remains unwavering as they continue their efforts under trying conditions.
