Local Hero: Alavi's Mundakkai Aids Army's Rescue Efforts
Alavi is closely observing the search operations with JCBs near Mundakkai Church. He frequently approaches a young acquaintance, ensuring they search thoroughly and miss no spots. With a smile, he heads home, reflecting on his deep connection to the area. Many of his family members and friends lived near the church, and he recalls their names, family sizes, those who passed away, and their exact house locations.
The army involved in the rescue operation is gathering information from Alavi. A soldier who knows Malayalam asks Alavi questions and relays them to higher officials in Hindi. Another soldier diligently writes down what Alavi says. Army officials confirmed that information from a local like Alavi is extremely helpful.

Alavi explains that the first landslide brought down trees and debris, accumulating in Seethammakund and forming a dam-like structure. The second landslide caused trees and boulders to collapse with a loud crash. This might have led to the downfall of Chooralmala Hill. After the landslide, many people from Mundakkai ran to Punjirimattam.
Despite being informed, they were unaware of the severity of the situation. "We were about 200 people who spent the night and day in a nearby resort. Later, the rescuers arrived and brought us down," he said. He points out a particular spot where water flowed and mentions a resort with four Bengali workers, stating, "We don't have any news about them."

The army's rescue team finds Alavi's local knowledge invaluable. A soldier fluent in Malayalam translates Alavi's responses into Hindi for higher officials. Another soldier meticulously documents Alavi's insights. The army acknowledges that such local information is crucial for their operations.
Alavi's familiarity with Mundakkai is evident as he recalls specific details about residents and their homes. His observations about the landslides' impact provide a critical context for ongoing rescue efforts. His detailed memory aids the army in understanding the area's geography and potential hazards better.
His account of how debris accumulated at Seethamma Kund highlights the complexity of the situation. The subsequent landslide exacerbated conditions, causing more destruction. Alavi's narrative underscores the importance of local knowledge in disaster response.
As rescue operations continue, Alavi remains a key source of information for the army. His firsthand experience and detailed recollections are instrumental in guiding search efforts. The collaboration between locals like Alavi and rescue teams exemplifies effective disaster management.
The situation remains challenging, but with contributions from knowledgeable locals like Alavi, rescue teams can navigate the complexities more effectively. His insights not only aid immediate rescue efforts but also help in planning future preventive measures.
Alavi's involvement underscores the critical role of community members in disaster response. Their intimate knowledge of the area can significantly enhance rescue operations' efficiency and effectiveness.
