Kerala Rains: Is It A Holiday For Schools and Colleges On Monday, July 28? Find Out Here
Kerala is once again in the grip of heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a special alert warning of widespread showers across the state and Lakshadweep from July 27 to July 30. A depression currently positioned over east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh is believed to be fueling the turbulent weather system.
Gusty winds and torrential rain have already disrupted life in multiple districts. Tragically, the state recorded five rain-related deaths on Saturday alone. In one incident, a 72-year-old farmer from Olassery in Palakkad, identified as Marimuthu, was electrocuted after coming in contact with a broken power line connected to a nearby pumphouse, according to a report in Mathrubhumi.

Search efforts are underway for a missing fisherman, Yusuf, from Ottapalam in Palakkad, who was last seen near the Meetna river bund. Fire and Rescue personnel are continuing operations despite adverse weather conditions.
The Central Water Commission has sounded a yellow alert for several rivers, including the Pamba and Manimala in Pathanamthitta, Kaliyar in Ernakulam, and Thodupuzha in Idukki. Residents living near riverbanks have been strongly advised not to venture into the waters.
Adding to the state's growing list of concerns is the rising water level in several major dams. A red alert has been issued for ten reservoirs, including Moozhiyar, Mattupetty, Ponmudi, Kallarkutty, Erattayar, and Banasurasagar, indicating the possibility of controlled water release.
Meanwhile, the National Ocean Status Research Centre (INCOIS) has issued a high tide and sea agitation alert for coastal areas of Kannur and Kasaragod from Sunday evening to the early hours of Monday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and tourism activities along the beaches have been temporarily suspended.
Kerala School Holiday On July 28
Amid these developments, a key question that has been worrying parents and students is whether schools and colleges will remain open on Monday, July 28.
With several districts, including Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki, having declared holidays over the past few days, attention has now turned to districts under yellow alert on July 28-notably Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
As of Sunday evening, no blanket holiday has been announced for the entire state. However, local administrations in yellow alert districts are likely to take a call by late night or early Monday, depending on overnight rain intensity and weather conditions. Parents and students are advised to stay tuned to official announcements from district collectors and local disaster management authorities.
Given the evolving situation, schools may adopt caution and switch to online classes where possible, especially in flood-prone and coastal regions.
