Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Travels In Bus - Watch Viral Video

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday unveiled a fleet of 300 new buses aimed at boosting public transport services across the state, as the government steps up efforts to modernise its ageing transport network and improve connectivity for millions of daily passengers.

The new vehicles were formally launched at a ceremony in Chennai attended by ministers, senior transport officials and representatives from state-run transport undertakings. Following the flag-off event, Vijay surprised commuters by boarding one of the buses and travelling through the city, using the journey to engage directly with passengers.

During the ride, the Chief Minister spoke with travellers about their commuting experiences, seeking feedback on service quality, punctuality and passenger facilities. He also listened to suggestions on how public transport services could be further improved.

The latest addition to Tamil Nadu's transport fleet includes both diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. Officials said the mix of vehicles reflects the state's twin objectives of expanding transport capacity while gradually moving towards cleaner and more efficient modes of operation.

Authorities expect the new buses to strengthen services on existing routes and improve accessibility in areas where demand has grown significantly in recent years. The deployment is also expected to ease pressure on older vehicles that have remained in service beyond their intended operational lifespan.

Tamil Nadu's public transport system is among the largest in the country, serving millions of passengers each day through a network of state-owned corporations. The newly acquired buses have been earmarked for seven transport corporations operating across different regions of the state. Long-distance operator State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) is not part of the current allocation.

Transport department officials said the buses would be distributed according to regional requirements, passenger volumes and operational priorities. The rollout will take place in stages, allowing corporations to gradually integrate the vehicles into their existing services.

The launch had originally been planned for 22 June, which coincided with Vijay's birthday celebrations. However, despite the revised schedule, preparations for the induction had already been completed. The buses had been transported to Chennai in advance and stationed at major transport hubs, including Koyambedu and Kilambakkam, ahead of the official inauguration.

Officials believe the fleet expansion will help improve service frequency, reduce breakdown-related disruptions and offer passengers a safer and more comfortable travel experience. The initiative forms part of the government's broader programme to upgrade public transport infrastructure and meet rising commuter demand across both urban centres and rural districts.

With the induction of 300 new buses, the state hopes to strengthen the backbone of its public transport system while ensuring more reliable and accessible travel for passengers across Tamil Nadu.
