Kerala School Holiday On December 11: Educational Institutions To Remain Closed On Thursday

The second and final phase of Kerala's high-stakes local body elections is poised for a decisive conclusion this Thursday, December 10th, with voters from the seven northern districts set to cast their ballots.

This phase encompasses the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, completing a crucial democratic exercise across the state's 1,200 local self-government institutions. The electoral process, a significant barometer of political sentiment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, has been marked by intense campaigning and stringent security arrangements, particularly for thousands of polling stations deemed sensitive.

A focal point of the electoral administration's strategy is the management of polling stations categorized as 'sensitive.' Of the total 12,225 polling stations operating in this second phase, a significant 2,055 have been placed under this heightened security classification. The district of Kannur, a region with a longstanding history of political rivalry and occasional clashes, accounts for nearly half of these, with 1,025 sensitive booths alone.

To ensure transparency, deter malpractices, and maintain public order, every one of these sensitive stations will be under constant digital surveillance. The State Election Commission (SEC) has mandated comprehensive live webcasting coupled with videography, creating a robust real-time monitoring mechanism. This initiative aims to foster a free and fair environment, allowing officials in centralised locations to oversee proceedings and respond promptly to any incidents.

The logistical and technological framework for the election is extensive. Over 74,000 officials have been deployed to manage the smooth conduct of the polls across the northern districts. Following the conclusion of voting, all eyes will turn to the counting process, scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. on Monday, December 13th.

The tallying of votes will not be confined to a single location but will occur simultaneously at multiple counting centres spread across various districts in Kerala. To ensure swift and accurate dissemination of results, the SEC will employ its specially developed 'TREND' software. This system is designed to provide real-time updates on the results as they are declared, offering political parties, media, and the public immediate access to the evolving electoral landscape.

This final phase follows the successful completion of Phase I this past Tuesday, December 8th, wherein the electorate from the seven southern districts-Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam-exercised their franchise. The bifurcation of the polls was a strategic decision to optimise security and administrative deployment. As the northern districts now prepare for their turn, the political climate remains charged.
