Kerala Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert For 3 Districts; Heavy Rains, Thunderstorm Expected

Kerala is experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more intense rain in the coming days. IMD has upgraded its yellow warning to an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts, indicating very heavy rainfall in some areas in next couple of days.

An orange alert signifies very heavy rain ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm, while a yellow alert indicates rainfall between 6 and 11 cm. Tragically, a 58-year-old woman reportedly died after being struck by lightning in Haripad, located in the coastal Alappuzha district. Rainwater has also flooded houses and an Anganwadi centre in Kazhakoottam near the state capital.

Kerala Faces Heavy Rain And Storms

Impact on Infrastructure

The severe weather has led to trees being uprooted and low-lying areas becoming waterlogged across various districts. In Chathamangalam, located in northern Kozhikode district, homes and vehicles have sustained damage due to strong winds and heavy rain. Similar incidents of tree uprooting have been reported in Ernakulam district as well.

Given the heavy rain warnings, the state disaster management authority has advised residents in landslide and mudslide-prone regions to remain vigilant and relocate to safer locations as instructed by authorities. Those residing near riverbanks or within dam catchment areas should also heed official warnings and move accordingly.

In addition to infrastructure damage, the adverse weather conditions have disrupted daily life for many residents. The persistent rains have caused significant inconvenience, with transportation affected and normal routines interrupted.

The state authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety. They are working diligently to address any emergencies that arise due to the ongoing severe weather conditions.

As Kerala continues to face these challenging weather conditions, it is crucial for residents to stay informed through official channels. Adhering to safety guidelines issued by authorities can help mitigate risks associated with such extreme weather events.
