Kerala Landslides: Mohanlal Visits Wayanad, Pledges Rs 3 Crore For Rehabilitation Works

Malayalam actor Mohanlal on Saturday visited the landslide-hit Wayanad. He reached the Meppadi region from Kozhikode.

The actor, who was conferred the Lt Colonel post in the territorial army in 2009, had talks with the army officials before heading to the disaster-hit areas with soldiers.

The actor has announced Rs 3 crore donation for the rehabilitation works. "The Vishwashanthi Foundation, of which I am also a part, has decided to donate Rs three crore for the rehabilitation works here. More funds will be made available if needed," the actor said.

He visited Chooralmala, Mundakkai and Punchirimattom, among other places, and interacted with the various rescue workers, including the Army and the locals, to get an understanding of the gravity of the incident.

Mohanlal had already announced Rs 25 lakh to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). In a moving message, he had also commended the hard work of volunteers, police, rescue teams, and government officials involved in the relief efforts. He also expressed thanks to the 122 Infantry Battalion TA Madras for their significant role in the mission.

The search and rescue operations in landslides-hit Wayanad in Kerala continued for the fifth straight day on Saturday, as several people are still feared trapped under the debris.

The death toll from the devastating incident on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad has reached 308 on Friday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said.

The relief teams, along with a dog squad, began the search operations at 7 am today, a Defence statement said. The Indian Army relief columns are also on site, with all activities coordinated by North Kerala IGP.
