Kerala Braces For Heavy Rains As IMD Issues Yellow Alert In 7 Districts

Kerala is set to experience a resurgence of heavy rainfall after a brief lull, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Widespread showers are forecast across various districts today, with a yellow alert issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Kerala Braces For Heavy Rains As IMD Issues Yellow Alert In 7 Districts

These districts could see isolated heavy rainfall, ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

In the next three hours, isolated thunderstorms with rain and strong winds of up to 40 km/h are expected in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode.

Light rain is also predicted for other districts. A yellow alert remains for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod on Tuesday (September 9), with rainfall likely to continue statewide until Wednesday.

This weather is influenced by a deep depression over the central-west and western Bay of Bengal, which is moving north towards the Odisha-West Bengal coast.

It is expected to intensify into a severe depression and make landfall between Puri (Odisha) and Digha (West Bengal). After landfall, it will move through Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.

In addition, a new low-pressure system has formed along the coastal region from Kerala to northern Karnataka, leading to widespread light to moderate rainfall across Kerala for the coming week, with isolated heavy downpours expected between September 4 and 10.
