Kerala Rain Alert: Is It A Holiday For Schools and Colleges on Friday, July 25? Find Out
As heavy rains continue to lash Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh alerts, sparking speculation over whether schools and educational institutions will remain open on Friday, July 26. With an orange alert in five districts and a yellow alert in nine others, parents and students are eagerly awaiting official announcements on possible holidays.
IMD Issues Orange & Yellow Alerts - Holiday Likely?
The IMD has warned of very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur on Friday, while Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are under an orange alert for Saturday. Additionally, a yellow alert (7-11 cm rainfall) has been issued for nine districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kannur.

Given the severity of the forecast, the Idukki and Ernakulam district administrations have declared a holiday for schools on Friday. Also, educational institutions in Kottayam, Meenachil, and Kanjirappally in Kottayam district will remain closed on Friday in view of heavy rains.
Historically, Kerala has often shut educational institutions during extreme weather to ensure student safety. Other districts are yet to announce whether the schools and colleges will function on Friday or will remain shut.
District Alerts in Place
The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts across several districts for the coming days:
Yellow Alert (July 24): Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
Orange Alert (July 25): Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur
Orange Alert (July 26): Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad
Orange Alert (July 27): Kannur, Kasaragod
Past Precedents Suggest Possible Closure
Last week, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kasaragod declared a holiday for all educational institutions following an IMD red alert. Similarly, Vadakara taluk in Kozhikode had a rain holiday recently.
However, as of now, no official orders have been issued by district collectors regarding school closures. The decision is expected to be made late tonight or early tomorrow based on the latest weather updates.
What Should Parents & Students Do?
- Keep an eye on official announcements from the district collector's office.
- Schools may send updates via WhatsApp groups or SMS alerts.
- If heavy rains persist overnight, an early-morning holiday announcement is possible.
With the entire state under heavy rain alert, the chances of a holiday in multiple districts remain high. Stay tuned for updates!
Will it be a rainy holiday tomorrow? The answer may come soon!
