Who is Manu Bhaker?
Manu Bhaker, an Indian shooter, has emerged as a prominent figure in the sport. Born in Jhajjar, Haryana, she initially engaged in various sports like tennis, skating, and boxing before discovering shooting at 14. Her talent quickly surfaced, prompting her to request a sport shooting pistol from her father.
In 2017, Bhaker surprised many by defeating Olympian Heena Sidhu to win the 10m Air Pistol final at the national shooting championships. The following year, she made her debut at the ISSF World Cup and clinched gold in the women's 10m Air Pistol event, becoming the youngest Indian to achieve this feat.
Success on the International Stage
Bhaker's international success continued with gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, ISSF Junior World Cup, and Youth Olympics. She also formed a successful partnership with Saurabh Chaudhary in mixed team events, securing multiple gold medals together.
In 2019, Bhaker earned an Olympic quota place for India and was seen as a strong contender for the Tokyo Olympics. However, during the competition, she faced challenges when her pistol malfunctioned mid-qualification. Despite her efforts to fix it, she did not advance to the finals in any of her events.
Since then, Bhaker has experienced mixed results in senior competitions but managed to secure a silver medal at the World Championships and a gold at the Asian Games. Recently, she secured a quota place for the Paris Olympics in the women's 25m pistol event.
