Olympic Champion Suni Lee Defeats Kidney Ailment to Return to Peak Form

At the Team USA media summit this week, Olympic gymnastics all-around champion Suni Lee shared her harrowing journey through a severe kidney disease last year, which nearly derailed her career. The then-18-year-old athlete faced a daunting challenge, with symptoms so severe that she gained 45 pounds in water weight, experienced constant pain, nausea, and lightheadedness. "I could not bend my legs the slightest, I couldn't squeeze my fingers, my face was swollen," Lee recounted. Despite these obstacles, she has made a remarkable recovery and is now eyeing a spot on the U.S. team for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Suni Lees Victorious Health Comeback

Lee's ascent to stardom was unexpected but meteoric at the Tokyo Games, stepping up when teammate Simone Biles withdrew for mental health reasons. Not originally slated for the U.S. team's floor exercise lineup, Lee's performance was pivotal in securing a silver medal for her team. Days later, she clinched the Olympic all-around title, becoming the fifth consecutive American woman to do so. Her signature uneven bars set was crucial in edging out Brazil's Rebeca Andrade for the gold.

Following her Olympic success, Lee enrolled at Auburn University but had to leave after falling ill post her sophomore season. Her return to gymnastics was uncertain, but her love for the sport and a desire to surpass her previous achievements have fueled her comeback. "Initially I decided I wanted to come back because I really was only getting better and I love gymnastics," Lee stated. She is now working on a new bars move that could potentially bear her name in the sport's Code of Points if successfully executed in international competition.

Lee credits her strong support system back in Minneapolis for her recovery and return to gymnastics. Despite not being at full strength, she continued training on her new skill, which bolstered her confidence. "I was learning my new skill and I was still able to catch it even at less than 100%," she said. This resilience has put Lee on the path back to the Olympics, where she aims to showcase her growth and dedication to gymnastics.

The journey from battling a debilitating kidney disease to aiming for Olympic glory again is a testament to Lee's perseverance and determination. With Simone Biles also expected to make a comeback, the U.S. gymnastics team is poised for an exciting performance in Paris. Lee's story of overcoming physical and mental challenges serves as an inspiration, highlighting the unwavering spirit of an athlete in pursuit of excellence.
