Sri Lanka Rallies to Post 236 Against England in First Test Opener

Sri Lanka managed to recover from a precarious position of six for three after seven overs to post a commendable 236 on the first day of the Test against England. This was largely due to half-centuries from captain Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant Milan Rathnayake at Old Trafford on Wednesday. England, in response, was 22-0 before bad light halted play early in Manchester.

Sri Lankas Day 1 Rally: 236 Runs

England's Early Dominance

England, fresh off a 3-0 series win over the West Indies, started strong despite missing captain Ben Stokes due to injury. They quickly reduced Sri Lanka to 40-4 and later to 113-7 on a pitch that seemed favourable for batting. Chris Woakes was instrumental for the hosts, taking 3-32 off his 11 overs, including the wickets of Nishan Madushka and Angelo Mathews in the same maiden over.

Sri Lanka's tail-end showed resilience with Silva scoring an 84-ball 74 and Rathnayake hitting six fours and two sixes in his debut innings of 72. This effort pushed Sri Lanka past the 200-run mark, giving England something to ponder.

Key Contributions

Gus Atkinson took the first wicket when Dimuth Karunaratne edged behind for two runs. Kusal Mendis, who scored 24, attempted to fend off a sharp delivery from Mark Wood but ended up looping it off his thumb to second slip. Offspinner Shoaib Bashir trapped Dinesh Chandimal lbw for 17 just before lunch, leaving Sri Lanka at 80-5.

De Silva played a crucial role by forming an eighth-wicket partnership of 63 with Rathnayake after Kamindu Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya were dismissed for 12 and 10 respectively. De Silva hit eight fours in his innings before edging to leg slip, giving Bashir his second wicket with figures of 3-55.

England's Reply

England openers Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence managed to survive four overs in fading light before play was called off. Duckett scored 13 while Lawrence added nine runs. Ollie Pope stepped in as captain for England, with Lawrence opening in place of Zak Crawley, who broke a finger during the West Indies series.

Rathnayake continued his impressive debut by reaching his fifty before being caught at mid-on off Bashir's bowling. His performance alongside De Silva's helped Sri Lanka post a competitive total despite their early setbacks.

The day began with an emotional tribute to the late England batter Graham Thorpe, setting a poignant tone for the match. As play resumes, both teams will be looking to build on their performances from Day 1.
