R Ashwin Aims to Broaden His Batting Skills Post IPL Insights

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin acknowledged on Saturday that he realised the need to broaden his game, particularly his batting, during this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) with Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin will captain Dindigul Dragons against Lyca Kovai Kings in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) final on Sunday.

Ashwin Expands Batting Skills

This season, Ashwin has excelled with the bat, being Dindigul's third-highest run-scorer. His effective use of reverse sweeps, especially against left-arm spinners R Sai Kishore and S Ajith Ram in Qualifier 2 versus Idream Tiruppur Tamizhans, has garnered attention. He has been hitting numerous boundaries towards the square of the wicket throughout the tournament.

Mastering Angles and Triggers

When asked about his proficiency in scoring towards the square of the wicket, Ashwin explained that it involves understanding angles and triggers. "Everything is a work in progress, right? It's all about repetitions, and understanding angles and triggers," Ashwin stated during the pre-final press conference on Saturday.

Reflecting on his IPL experience, Ashwin mentioned that he felt the need to expand his game beyond hitting down the ground and using his feet. "Obviously, in the last IPL, I felt like I needed to widen my game and horizons square of the wicket because I know I can hit the ball down the ground, and I can use my feet," he said. He added that exploring new options keeps him engaged in the game.

Shahrukh Khan's Spin Game Improvement

Meanwhile, Lyca Kovai Kings' skipper Shahrukh Khan shared insights from his time with IPL side Gujarat Titans. He revealed that working on batting against spinners during a camp with Gujarat Titans significantly improved his performance. "When I was with the Gujarat Titans, we had a camp for about a couple of months there. So, I started working a lot on my spin game because they wanted me to bat up the order," Shahrukh said.

Shahrukh noted that batting up the order required him to address his concerns against spin bowling. "And, when you bat up the order, obviously for a batter like me having my concerns against spin, especially, opponent teams would bring in spin when I come out to bat," he explained. The focus on improving his spin game has paid off, as evidenced by his performance in TNPL.

The 29-year-old all-rounder has been Lyca Kovai Kings' second-highest run-getter this season after B Sai Sudharsan and boasts the best strike rate on his team at 191.37. The TNPL final is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Ashwin's journey this season highlights his adaptability and willingness to evolve as a player. His efforts to master new techniques have not only enhanced his batting but also kept him motivated. Similarly, Shahrukh's dedication to improving his spin game demonstrates how targeted practice can lead to significant improvements in performance.

The upcoming TNPL final promises an exciting contest between two teams led by players who have shown remarkable growth this season. Fans eagerly await to see how these strategies and improvements will play out on the field.
