Manika Batra Scripts History As First Indian To Enter Olympics TT Pre-Quarterfinals
Manika Batra has made history by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to reach the singles pre-quarterfinals at the Olympic Games. She achieved this milestone with a 4-0 victory over world number 18 and local favourite Prithika Pavade on Monday. The 29-year-old dominated the match, securing an 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 win over Prithika, who has Indian roots.
Prithika's parents originally hail from Puducherry but moved to France in 2003. She was born in a Paris suburb a year later. The 19-year-old had participated in the Tokyo Olympics, exiting in the first round. Since then, she has improved significantly and is currently ranked 18th in the world, compared to Manika's rank of 28.

Manika's Tactical Mastery
Manika's strategy to target Prithika's backhand proved highly effective, although it wasn't her initial plan. "I had planned to play to her forehand as discussed with my coach but I was getting the points on her backhand, so I did not change the tactics," Manika said after her match. "I did play a few shots on her forehand too; I did not want her to think that I am playing only on her backhand."
The first game was closely contested, with both players going neck and neck. At 8-8, Manika forced a backhand error from Prithika and closed the game with a powerful forehand drive that Prithika couldn't return. This set the tone for the rest of the match.
Prithika's Journey and Challenges
Left-handed Prithika entered the Olympics following an impressive run where she reached the WTT final for the first time in June. However, she couldn't find a way past Manika, who delivered a commanding performance. Despite trailing in rankings, Manika's experience and tactical acumen shone through.
In the second game, Manika carried her momentum forward, taking an early lead of 3-1. Although Prithika managed to level the scores by inducing errors from Manika, the Indian player's consistent attacks on Prithika's backhand helped her regain control. Consecutive backhand errors from Prithika handed Manika the second game.
Match Highlights
The third game saw Manika gaining a healthy 3-0 lead as Prithika struggled with her returns. A desperate Prithika managed to get her first point with a strong forehand winner but couldn't sustain the momentum. With an 8-4 lead, Manika continued to attack Prithika's backhand side.
Trailing 5-10 in the third game, Prithika made a brief comeback by taking four consecutive points. However, Manika needed just one more point to close out the game. A netted backhand drive from Prithika gave Manika a 3-0 lead.
The fourth game saw Manika taking a commanding 10-5 lead and earning five match points. She converted the third match point when Prithika netted her backhand, sealing the victory in just 37 minutes.
"I am happy that I beat a French player in Paris. I defeated a higher-ranked player," said Manika after her win. "I did not think of creating history and making the pre-quarters; there are more rounds. I will take it match by match and give my best as I always do."
Manika's achievement marks one of the most memorable moments for Indian table tennis at the Olympics. Having reached the round of 32 at the Tokyo Olympics, she bettered that performance on Monday.
"It was a tough match. Staying relaxed helps me both on and off the court," she added. "I do breathing exercises that help me during matches. I will give my best whoever I play against in the next round."
This historic win not only highlights Manika's skill but also underscores her mental strength and strategic prowess on such a significant stage.
