Iran Confirms FIFA World Cup 2026 Participation But Raises Concerns With US, Canada And Mexico

Iran Football Federation has confirmed that Iran's men's national football team will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite growing political tensions involving some of the host nations.

At the same time, the federation has urged co-hosts - the United States, Canada and Mexico - to address several concerns related to the team's treatment and security during the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be the biggest edition in football history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across North America.

Iran Confirms Participation In FIFA World Cup 2026

Iran has already qualified for the tournament and has been placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt.

According to the current schedule, Iran's group-stage matches are expected to take place in Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States.

Canada's Decision Sparks Controversy

The latest controversy began after Canada reportedly denied entry to the chief of the Iran Football Federation ahead of the FIFA Congress.

Canadian authorities cited alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Canada officially designated as a terrorist organisation in 2024.

The IRGC is a powerful branch of Iran's military and has been at the centre of several international disputes in recent years.

Iran Places Conditions For Participation

Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, said Iran has placed 10 conditions for participating in the tournament.

According to Iranian media reports, the federation is seeking guarantees regarding visa approvals, respect for the Iranian flag and national anthem, and proper treatment of players and officials during the competition.

Iran has also asked for enhanced security arrangements at airports, hotels and stadium routes to ensure the safety of the national team and delegation members.
The federation stressed that sports should remain separate from political disagreements and that the team should be treated fairly throughout the tournament.

US Signals Mixed Response

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Iranian footballers would be welcome to compete in the United States during the World Cup.

However, Rubio also indicated that members of the Iranian delegation who have links to the IRGC could still face restrictions or be denied entry into the country.
This has added uncertainty over whether all Iranian officials connected to the team will be allowed to travel freely during the event.
