Indian Hockey Team to Fight for Bronze at Paris Olympics After Narrow Miss for Gold
Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh expressed their disappointment on Tuesday after failing to secure a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. They acknowledged that winning a bronze would be better than returning home empty-handed.

India narrowly missed entering the Olympic hockey final for the first time in 44 years, losing 2-3 to Germany in a closely contested semifinal. Now, India will face Spain for the bronze medal, while Germany will compete against the Netherlands in the final.
Disappointment and Reflection
Harmanpreet shared his thoughts post-match with Jio Cinema, stating, "This is extremely disappointing as we came here to win a gold medal. But, having said that, it's better to go home with bronze than nothing." He added that losing in the semifinal is tough as reaching the final is every athlete's dream.
Sreejesh, playing his last international tournament, echoed similar sentiments. "It's a heartbreaking loss for us. We had the chance to win gold, but now, we have to forget this semifinal and focus on the bronze medal match," he said.
Coach and Team Analysis
India's coach Craig Fulton also expressed his sadness over the defeat. "We're disappointed we could not get over the line. We played a great match, pushed very hard till the end," he remarked. Both Harmanpreet and Sreejesh agreed that mistakes cost them dearly in the end.
"We made a few errors in defence and we missed a few chances," said Harmanpreet, who scored India's first goal in the seventh minute. Sreejesh added, "We can't commit such silly mistakes during the match. We could not make an impact in the opponent's half."
Focus on Team Effort
Sreejesh downplayed the attention on his final outing with the national team. "I think rather than my situation, the team is more important. Just forget about that and play the next game in a better way, bounce back in the next game," he stated.
Both players wished champion wrestler Vinesh Phogat luck ahead of her gold medal bout in the 50kg freestyle category on Thursday. They hoped she would succeed and make India proud.
Match Highlights
India started strongly and dominated early exchanges before Germany regrouped. Harmanpreet scored in the 7th minute and Sukhjeet Singh added another goal in the 36th minute for India. For Germany, Gonzalo Peillat scored in the 18th minute, Christopher Ruhr in the 27th minute, and Marco Miltkau netted the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
The Indian team now aims to regroup and focus on securing a bronze medal against Spain. The players are determined to give their best performance and bring home a medal despite their disappointment at missing out on gold.
