Teen Chess Prodigy D Gukesh Welcomed as Hero in Chennai After Historic Victory
History was made as teen Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh returned to India, greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, following his monumental victory at the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto. This win marks him as the youngest challenger for the world chess title, a record previously held by chess legend Garry Kasparov 40 years ago. Gukesh's triumph not only places him in the spotlight for an upcoming clash against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren of China, but also cements his status as a prodigious talent in the realm of chess.

Upon his arrival, the 17-year-old was welcomed by hundreds of students from Velammal Vidyalaya, his school, alongside a significant number of chess enthusiasts and supporters. The crowd's excitement was palpable as they awaited Gukesh's arrival, which occurred around 3 am. The young grandmaster expressed his gratitude towards his family, coach, friends, sponsor, and school for their unwavering support. He also acknowledged the role of luck in his victory and shared his happiness over the increasing popularity of chess.
Gukesh's journey to becoming a grandmaster has been nothing short of spectacular. At just 12 years old, he became India's youngest Grandmaster—a title he claimed in January 2019. With a current FIDE rating of 2743 and a peak rating of 2758 achieved last September, Gukesh stands 16th in the FIDE Rankings. His remarkable achievements include a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year in the men's team category.
The significance of Gukesh's victory at the Candidates Tournament cannot be overstated. He is the first Indian after Viswanathan Anand to win this prestigious event, setting up an eagerly anticipated match against Ding Liren later this year. Among those he outplayed was R Praggnanandhaa, another young talent from India, showcasing the depth of emerging chess prodigies from the country.
Gukesh's ascent in the world of chess is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the support system around him. His achievements have not only brought him into the global spotlight but have also inspired a new generation of chess players in India and around the world. As he prepares for his upcoming match against Ding Liren, all eyes will be on this young grandmaster to see how far his talent and determination can take him.
