Veterans Cornet, Gasquet Granted Wild Cards for French Open

In a notable announcement made Tuesday, French tennis veterans Alizé Cornet and Richard Gasquet have been granted wild-card entries into the upcoming French Open. This decision comes as part of the French Tennis Federation's allocation of wild cards for the prestigious clay-court Grand Slam tournament, set to commence on May 26. The inclusion of Cornet and Gasquet highlights their significant contributions to French tennis, as well as their enduring presence in the sport.

French Open Wild Cards to Cornet, Gasquet

Alizé Cornet, aged 34, has openly declared her intention to retire following her participation in this year's Roland Garros, marking a poignant end to her illustrious career. This year will see Cornet making her 20th consecutive appearance at the French Open since her Grand Slam debut in 2005. Her journey at Roland Garros has seen her reach the fourth round twice, showcasing her resilience and skill on clay. Notably, Cornet's most successful Grand Slam performance came at the Australian Open in 2022, where she reached the quarterfinals. Once ranked as high as No. 11, Cornet currently holds the No. 99 spot in the world rankings.

Richard Gasquet, another seasoned player at 37 years old, boasts a career-high ranking of No. 7 achieved back in 2007. His performance at the French Open peaked in 2016 when he advanced to the quarterfinals, although he has not progressed beyond the third round at Roland Garros since then. Gasquet's Grand Slam achievements also include reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon twice and once at the U.S. Open. Presently, he is ranked No. 113 globally.

The French Tennis Federation has also extended wild-card invitations to players from outside France, in line with reciprocal agreements with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Tennis Australia. Among those benefiting from this arrangement are American Sachia Vickery and Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the women's draw, and Australian Adam Walton in the men's draw. These reciprocal wild cards are part of a longstanding tradition that fosters international cooperation and talent exchange among these Grand Slam events.

This year's selection of wild-card recipients underscores the blend of experience and emerging talent set to grace the clay courts of Roland Garros. As veterans like Cornet and Gasquet prepare for what may be their final appearances at this level, their participation adds a layer of anticipation and nostalgia to the tournament's narrative.
