Iran and Israel at War, But Brighton Once United Their Footballers

The war that erupted between Iran and Israel on June 13, 2025, has plunged the Middle East into one of its gravest crises in recent memory. A surprise Israeli offensive targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites triggered a wave of retaliatory missile strikes from Tehran. The escalation has resulted in a devastating human toll.

According to Iranian state outlets, over 430 civilians have been killed and more than 3,000 wounded, while independent sources claim the actual death toll exceeds 720, including close to 200 military personnel. In Israel, the Iranian strikes have claimed at least 24 lives and injured over 1,000 individuals. Key urban centers such as Tel Aviv and Haifa have suffered heavily, with a particularly alarming attack on Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba injuring 76 people.

The conflict escalated further when the United States launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued stark warnings against U.S. involvement. Diplomatic efforts in Geneva and Istanbul have thus far failed to produce a ceasefire, as both nations persist with hostile exchanges, raising fears of a broader regional conflagration.

In the midst of such political hostility, the idea of Iranian and Israeli athletes sharing the same pitch might seem unfathomable. Yet, history holds a rare but telling example of how sport-particularly football-once transcended even the most entrenched divisions.

Brighton & Hove Albion: A Moment of Sporting Coexistence for Iran and Israel

Back in 2018, English club Brighton & Hove Albion offered a subtle but powerful counter-narrative. The Premier League side had, for a brief period, Iranian and Israeli players coexisting in the same dressing room-defying the political animosities of their homelands.

Iranian winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh joined Brighton in 2018 and played a pre-season match against OGC Nice, which the Seagulls won 1-0. At that time, Brighton's squad also featured two Israelis-Tomer Hemed, a Jewish Israeli striker, and Beram Kayal, an Arab Israeli midfielder.

Jahanbakhsh remained at Brighton until 2021, amassing 61 appearances. Hemed, who had already been loaned to QPR in 2018, officially departed the club in 2019 after 108 appearances. Kayal, meanwhile, played alongside Jahanbakhsh during the 2018-19 campaign before leaving the club the same year, having featured 131 times for the Seagulls.

Though fleeting, their shared tenure at Brighton stands as a testament to how football, even in the face of bitter geopolitical enmity, can momentarily bridge divides that diplomacy cannot.
