England Triumphs Over Netherlands with Watkins' Late Goal, Eyes Euro Final
England secured a spot in their second consecutive European Championship final by defeating the Netherlands 2-1, with Ollie Watkins scoring a stoppage-time winner on Wednesday. Watkins, who replaced captain Harry Kane, fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner in the first minute of added time. England will face Spain in the final on Sunday in Berlin, marking their first title match abroad.

Watkins' Impactful Substitution
Watkins had only appeared once before at Euro 2024, as a substitute against Denmark. His introduction by coach Gareth Southgate in such a crucial match was unexpected but proved decisive. "Unbelievable -- I have been waiting for that moment for weeks," said Watkins, who was the fourth top scorer in the Premier League last season. "It has taken a lot of hard work to get to where I am today. I got the opportunity and took it with both hands."
The goal was set up by another substitute, Cole Palmer. Watkins shared his confidence in Palmer's ability to assist him: "I said to Palmer, we are going to come on and you are going to set me up. I knew, as soon as he got the ball, he was going to play me in. When it went in the bottom corner, it was the best feeling ever."
First Half Action
The match began with an open first half. Xavi Simons gave the Dutch an early lead with a brilliant strike in the seventh minute. However, Harry Kane equalised for England with an 18th-minute penalty after Denzel Dumfries fouled him during a shot attempt. Kane's goal made him one of six players with three goals in the tournament.
The first half also saw Dumfries and England's Phil Foden hit the goal frame. The second half turned tighter and more tense, with fewer chances created by either side.
Challenges and Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Westfalenstadion was intense, with Dutch supporters dominating the stands and city centre before the game. Police reported three separate clashes between fans from both countries. Despite this, England managed to come from behind once again, having done so in both the last 16 and quarterfinals.
Simons' goal made him the second-youngest scorer for the Netherlands at a Euros. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder dispossessed Declan Rice about 40 metres out and unleashed a shot into the far corner from outside the area.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Kane acknowledged the challenge ahead against Spain: "It is going to be unbelievably tough -- a really difficult game," he said. Spain is widely regarded as having played the best football so far in the tournament. England aims to make history with one more game.
The victory over the Netherlands sets up an exciting final against Spain, featuring young talents like Lamine Yamal and seasoned players like Kane. The match promises to be a thrilling conclusion to Euro 2024.
England's journey to this point has been marked by resilience and strategic decisions by Southgate, including his bold call to bring on Watkins. The team's performance has captured the attention of football fans worldwide as they prepare for their first title match on foreign soil since winning the World Cup in 1966.
The final against Spain will be a significant test for England as they seek to add another major trophy to their collection.
