Delhi's Transport Department to Issue E-Challans via WhatsApp for Commercial Vehicle Owners
Delhi's transport department is set to implement a new system for sending challans to commercial vehicle owners via WhatsApp, officials have announced. For those not using WhatsApp, notifications will be sent through SMS and email. With approximately 82 lakh active vehicles in Delhi, the daily issuance of 1,000-1,500 e-challans is expected to increase significantly once this system is operational.

The department has initiated the process of hiring a service provider to manage challan enforcement for commercial vehicles registered in Delhi. A senior transport department officer stated that the aim is to create and distribute personalised content using hyperlinks, PDFs, and text for e-challans and other services. This will involve accessing individual challans from the e-Parivahan portal.
WhatsApp Integration for E-Challans
The service provider will establish WhatsApp accounts integrated with e-challans to send payment links issued by the transport department to vehicle owners. Additionally, they will provide a user interface for sending WhatsApp notifications and messages to registered users of the application developed by the department.
Messages will be available in both English and Hindi, with the messaging framework capable of sending various formats such as images, videos, and PDFs as allowed by WhatsApp. This automated process will include sending e-challans, certificates, user manuals, and other notifications like due date reminders, payment receipts, and notices to vehicle owners through WhatsApp.
Officials noted that this new system aims to streamline communication with vehicle owners by utilising digital platforms effectively. The integration of WhatsApp is expected to enhance the efficiency of delivering important notifications and updates related to traffic violations and payments.
This initiative reflects a broader trend towards digitalisation in public services, aiming to improve accessibility and convenience for citizens. By leveraging popular communication platforms like WhatsApp, the transport department hopes to ensure timely delivery of information while reducing reliance on traditional methods.
The introduction of this system marks a significant step towards modernising traffic management in Delhi. As technology continues to evolve, such measures are crucial in addressing the challenges posed by an increasing number of vehicles on the road.
