Delhi Premier League 2024: Netizens Criticise Rishabh Pant For Struggling Against Spinners

Indian cricket team wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant scored 35 off 32 balls for Purani Dilli 6 in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) match against South Delhi Superstarz on Saturday. Despite his efforts, Pant's performance was criticised on social media due to his struggles against spin. His innings included four fours and one six, ending with a strike rate of just 109.

Before the match, Pant was honoured by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla for his performances in India's ICC T20 World Cup triumph. The felicitation highlighted his contributions to India's success in the tournament.

Delhi Premier League Opening Ceremony

The inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) T20 kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Music sensation Badshah and actress Sonam Bajwa entertained the crowd, making it a memorable event. The ceremony was attended by DDCA's top management, franchise team owners, players, and staff from all participating teams.

Pant had a commendable showing at the T20 World Cup 2024 but failed to deliver big knocks consistently. Fans expected him to score heavily at the top of the innings, but he couldn't meet those expectations. In eight innings of the competition, he scored 171 runs at an average of 24.42, with his highest score being 42.

Pant's Performance Under Scrutiny

Pant's struggles against spin were evident during the DPL match. "On a flat deck in the first game of DPL Pant is 24 off 27. This is not the IPL, this is not T20I. This is a state T20 league. He's now won the T20 WC win for India yet here he is. can't play spin at all. And this is good news for the ICT," tweeted Kshitij Ojha.

Despite his challenges spin bowling, Pant's overall performance in the T20 World Cup was notable. He played some crucial under testing conditions at Nassau County Stadium in the USA and was also exceptional behind the stumps, taking 13 catches and completing one stumping to finish with 14 dismissals-the most by any keeper in a single T20 WC.

Critics pointed out that Pant often plays around 20-30 balls but only manages to score-a-ball, which isn't beneficial in T20 cricket. "We call Rishabh Pant a match winner but in reality it's far far away from delivery in white ball cricket. He plays 20-30 balls almost every time but manages to score only run & ball which will not help any team in T20.E 25 of 10 balls will be very satisfactory in this format," tweeted Sujeet Suman.

The event saw participation from various stakeholders including franchise team owners and players from both men's and women's teams. The atmosphere was electric as fans eagerly awaited the start of this new league.

Pant's inability to handle spin effectively has raised concerns among fans and experts alike. "Pant looking absolutely clueless against the spinners," commented Kaushik Kashyap on Twitter.

While Pant has shown flashes of brilliance, consistency remains an issue that he needs to address moving forward. His performance will be closely watched as he continues to play in domestic leagues and international matches.
