Gautam Gambhir's Tough Call: BCCI Limits Family Time On Tours After Recent Setbacks
The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) has introduced stricter family time guidelines for players on international tours, reportedly following a suggestion from head coach Gautam Gambhir. This move comes after India's disappointing performances in back-to-back Test series against New Zealand and Australia under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Gambhir.

Gambhir Pushes for Discipline
According to sources, Gambhir raised concerns over indiscipline within the Indian team during a review meeting with the BCCI after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat. He proposed limiting family time during both short and long tours to refocus the players on cricket, as reported by India Today.
Under the new rules, players' families will only be allowed to join for 14 days during tournaments lasting 45 days or more. For shorter tours, family presence will be restricted to just a week.
"Gambhir emphasized the need to bring back discipline in the Indian dressing room and revert to pre-COVID protocols for family stays," a source told India Today on condition of anonymity.
Stricter Approach Towards Player Commitments
Gambhir has also reportedly advocated for stricter oversight of junior players. The review highlighted instances of players frequently dining out during the Australian tour, with only one team dinner being organized over the three-month stretch from November 2024 to January 2025.
Performance-Linked Match Fees
During the review, a senior player present at the meeting suggested that players' match fees should be linked to their on-field performance. The proposal argued that immediate disbursal of fees might discourage players from prioritizing domestic cricket and national commitments, as reported by India Today.
"Some players are not fully focused on their responsibilities. Performance-based distribution of match fees could help instill accountability," the source added.
Upcoming Discussions
A potential meeting between Gautam Gambhir and a senior BCCI official may take place during the first T20I against England in Kolkata to address ongoing controversies, as per media reports.
With these changes, the BCCI and Gambhir aim to rebuild discipline and restore India's dominance in international cricket. Whether these measures will yield results remains to be seen.
