Vinesh Phogat's CAS Appeal Decision Postponed to August 13
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will take additional time to deliberate on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the women's 50kg freestyle final at the Olympic Games. The decision will now be announced on August 13. Phogat, aged 29, was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in on Wednesday.

Indian Olympic Association Clarifies
Initially, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) stated that the verdict would be out on Sunday. However, they later clarified that the outcome would be known only on August 13. "The ad-hoc division of CAS has extended time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee matter to give a decision till 6-00 p.m. on August 13, 2024," read an IOA statement.
The earlier communication from IOA referenced August 11 as the deadline for all parties to present additional documents before the Sole Arbitrator. The IOA apologised for any confusion and inconvenience caused by this miscommunication.
Appeal and Representation
Phogat's appeal was accepted by the CAS ad-hoc division, which was set up specifically for dispute resolution during the Games. She has requested to be awarded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who advanced to the final after Phogat's disqualification. American Sarah Hildebrandt won gold by defeating Lopez in the final match.
Representing Phogat are senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania. Following her disqualification, Phogat expressed her disappointment and announced her retirement on social media.
United World Wrestling and IOC Stance
The United World Wrestling has stated that it does not support making an exception for Phogat but may consider rule reforms in the future. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach echoed this sentiment.
The Games will conclude with a ceremony at Stade de France, which hosted track and field events. India finished with six medals: one silver and five bronze. Pistol shooter Manu Bhaker secured two bronze medals, while Neeraj Chopra won silver in men's javelin throw, defending his title.
Phogat's case remains under review, with all eyes on the final decision expected on August 13.
