Ancy Sojan Triumphs with Long-Jump Gold at Indian Grand Prix Athletics

At the Indian Grand Prix held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, star long-jumper Ancy Sojan marked her return to competition with a triumphant gold medal in the women's section, leaping an impressive 6.52 metres. This event marked her first appearance after a seven-month hiatus due to an injury. Despite not meeting the Olympic qualification mark of 6.96m and falling short of her personal best of 6.63m, Sojan's performance was a significant achievement. The Asian Games silver medallist's comeback is particularly noteworthy, considering none of the participants in the event managed to meet the Olympic qualification standards in their respective categories.

Ancy Sojan Wins Long-Jump Gold

The competition served as a crucial stepping stone for athletes aiming for the Paris Olympics, with the national state championship in Panchkula from June 27 to 30 being the final qualifier. In the long jump event, Nayana James secured the second position with a leap of 6.48m, followed by Andhra Pradesh’s Bhavani Yadav who clinched third place with a distance of 6.27m.

In other track events, Andhra Pradesh’s Dandi Jyothika emerged victorious in the women’s 400m race, clocking an impressive 51.53 seconds. Tamil Nadu’s Shubha Venkatesan and Karnataka’s MR Poovamma finished second and third with times of 52.34 and 52.62 seconds respectively. The men's 100m sprint saw Tamil Nadu's Ragul Kumar clinch gold with a time of 10.56 seconds, closely followed by Karnataka's Manikanta Hoblidhar and Kerala’s C Abhinav.

The women's 100m sprint witnessed Karnataka athletes dominating the podium. SS Sneha won gold with a time of 11.41 seconds, while V Sudheeska secured bronze for the state with a time of 11.75 seconds. The silver medal was awarded to Abhinaya Rajarajan who completed the race in 11.60 seconds.

However, the javelin throw event saw an unexpected turn as premier thrower Kishore Jena did not participate, leaving Sachin Yadav and Rohit Yadav from Uttar Pradesh to take home the top honours with throws of 82.69 and 75.52 metres respectively.

This Grand Prix not only highlighted the resilience and determination of athletes like Ancy Sojan but also set the stage for upcoming talents across various track and field events as they prepare for more challenging competitions ahead, including the much-anticipated Paris Olympics.
