Gas leakage in Bhilai Steel Plant: 6 dead, 40 injured

Raipur, June 12: Six persons, including two deputy general managers, were killed and over 30 people were injured in methane gas leakage in the Bhilai Steel Plant in Durg district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday.

The gas leakage from a blast furnace took place around 6.30 pm owing to breakdown in a water pump, leading to the tragic consequences, a statement issued by the plant said.

Inspector General of Police of Durg Range Pradeep Gupta confirmed the deaths. The injured were sent to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Bhilai for treatment. The injured included CISF personnel, workers, and officials of the plant.

The dead included two deputy general managers. A probe would be undertaken

"Plant Management is providing all possible care and support and efforts are on for an early liquidation from the breakdown," the statement by the plant said, according to the PTI.

A high-level probe would be conducted to confirm the cause of the breakdown and the management assured all possible support to the affected persons, the statement added.

Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed grief over the incident and promised best medical care for the injured.
