Puducherry School Holidays: Authorities Announce To Shut School For Students Of These Classes Following Bandh
In Puducherry, schools for students in classes 1 to 8 are closed today. This closure is due to a bandh organised by the INDIA alliance in response to the recent increase in power tariffs. However, classes for students in standards 9 to 12 will proceed as planned.
The INDIA alliance has initiated this bandh to protest against the hike in electricity rates. The power tariff in Puducherry has been revised annually since April 1. However, the announcement of this year's increase was postponed because of the parliamentary election schedule. The new rates were implemented on June 16.

Impact on Electricity Charges
The revised power tariffs have resulted in an increase in household electricity costs by 40 to 75 paise per unit. For example, the rate for the initial 100 units rose from Rs 2.25 to Rs 2.70. Similarly, charges for usage between 101 and 200 units increased from Rs 3.25 to Rs 4.
Electric vehicle charging stations have also experienced a price hike. The cost per unit has gone up from Rs 5.33 to Rs 5.75, affecting both private and public charging facilities across Puducherry.

This bandh reflects growing discontent among residents regarding rising electricity costs. Many households are feeling the financial strain due to these increased charges, prompting widespread support for today's protest.
The decision to close schools for younger students aims to ensure their safety during the bandh activities. Authorities have advised parents and guardians to keep children at home while older students continue with their regular school day.
As Puducherry navigates these changes, residents hope for a resolution that addresses their concerns about affordability and access to essential services like electricity.
