The case was shifted from Tamil Nadu to Puducherry in 2005 by the Supreme Court after Jayendra Saraswathi filed a Special Leave Petition and said that the situation in Tamil Nadu was not fit for a free and fair trial. The trial has seen examination of 189 witnesses, including the wife of Sankararaman.
