9-year-old Sankararaman murder case verdict today
On September 3, 2004, A Sankararaman, the manager of Sri Varadarajaperumal temple in Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, was murdered and 24 people were accused in the case. Sankaracharyas of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi are the prime accused in the case.
One accused, M Kathiravan, was hacked to death in K K Nagar in Chennai in March this year.

The case was shifted from Tamil Nadu to Puducherry in 2005 by the Supreme Court after Jayendra Saraswathi filed a Special Leave Petition and said that the situation in Tamil Nadu was not fit for a free and fair trial. Later, the apex court asked the Puducherry government to appoint its own public prosecutor for the trial after Jayendra Saraswathi filed another Special Leave Petition seeking a change in the Tamil Nadu's public prosecutors in the Puducherry court. The trial has seen examination of 189 witnesses, including the wife of Sankararaman.
