Senior citizen held for raping mentally-challenged woman

Panaji, July 4: A 77-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 45-year-old mentally-challenged woman in Assolda village, police said today.

Teofilo Moraes was held yesterday for allegedly raping the victim at his farm in Quepem taluka on June 23 where she had gone to collect coconuts. The victim initially kept mum on the incident, but later confided in her sister who lodged the complaint against Moraes on July 2.The man has been taken into custody.

"We are probing the case," said the police. "We have arrested the accused and investigating him. We have also registered the victim's comments and will take due action," added the police.

According to police, the accused has been taken into police custody after seeking a 5-day remand from the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Quepem on Wednesday. A case under Sections 376 and 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code for raping and threatening the victim has been lodged against the accused.
