Guwahati molestation: Main accused Amar Jyoti Kalita held

Bangalore, Jul 15: Amar Jyoti Kalita, main accused in the

case, was picked up by the police from the

railway station today, the newspaper

claimed.

Earlier Assam police nabbed two other accused namely Diganta Basumatary and Navajyoti Deka. Incidentally, Sub-inspector Subhan Baruah of Dispur police station has been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Amar Jyoti Kalita is the 7th person to be arrested in connection with the molestation of a young woman outside a bar in Guwahati on the night of Jul 9. The victim was stripped by a group of youths and harassed for nearly an hour until the police arrived and rescued her.

The incident was filmed by journalists of Newslive, a local channel, and telecast live. After the video was uploaded on YouTube, there was a massive public outcry. It prompted the National Commission for Women to send a fact-finding team to Assam.

The team will submit a report to the panel's chairperson tomorrow.
