Traffic movement in several parts of central Delhi is expected to remain affected on Friday due to an official programme scheduled at Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Sthal on Martyrs' Day.

According to the police, the event will be attended by senior dignitaries, prompting heightened security arrangements in the area.

In view of the programme, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory and asked commuters to plan their journeys in advance. Traffic diversions will be implemented on an "as per need" basis, depending on the movement of dignitaries and the prevailing security situation.

Roads Likely to Face Diversions

Police officials said traffic restrictions and diversions may be imposed between 9 am and 12 pm on Friday across several major roads and surrounding stretches. Key routes that may be affected include:

Shanti Van Chowk to IP Flyover

Asaf Ali Road from Delhi Gate to NS Marg

Shanti Van Chowk to Nishad Raj Marg

Motorists are advised to avoid these routes during the scheduled hours and follow traffic personnel on duty.

Advice for Commuters

Authorities have urged people to use public transport as much as possible to reduce congestion. Commuters have also been asked to park vehicles only at designated parking areas and avoid stopping on roadsides, which could disrupt traffic flow.

The police further advised citizens to stay alert and immediately report any suspicious object or person by calling the emergency helpline number 112.

Significance of Martyrs' Day

Martyrs' Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas or Sarvodaya Day, is observed every year on January 30 to honour those who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. The day marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.

Gandhi was shot by Nathuram Godse during evening prayers at Gandhi Smriti, then known as Birla House. Fondly called Bapu, Gandhi played a central role in India's independence movement and is remembered worldwide for his principles of non-violence and truth. His death anniversary is observed across the country as Mahatma Gandhi Punyatithi.
