Leaders pay tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on 70th birth anniversary (In pics)

New Delhi, Aug 20: The nation on Wednesday remembered late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 70th birth anniversary. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress leaders Soni Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and daughter of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra also paid tributes to the late prime minister at his samadhi at Vir Bhumi. Other Congress and National Students Union of India leaders also paid respects to Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi, son of former prime minister Indira Gandhi and grandson of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was born on August 20, 1944, in Mumbai and went on to become the country's youngest prime minister in 1984 after the assassination of his mother. He served as the PM for one term and it was during his time that India involved itself deeply with the LTTE problem in Sri Lanka. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber during the election campaign on May 21, 1991, at Sriprumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
