These arrests spanned across various states including Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, underscoring a nationwide crackdown on organized immigration scams. The police have shifted their strategy to focus on holding fraudulent agents accountable rather than solely targeting unwitting passengers who often seek better opportunities abroad.
This strategic pivot aims to address the root causes of illegal immigration schemes, yielding substantial success in detection and apprehension efforts, as reported by the Economic Times. A thorough review of pending cases revealed that investigators have diligently pursued both old and new cases, resulting in the apprehension of 51 agents involved in previous cases and 57 from new investigations in 2024.
Additionally, 76 Look Out Circulars (LOCs) were issued to track down agents who fled abroad or remained untraceable, marking a twofold increase from the previous year. The proactive measures have also led to the arrest of several Proclaimed Offenders (POs) involved in long-standing cases, demonstrating the police's commitment to resolving complex legal matters, as per media reports.
Public awareness campaigns have been crucial in preventing individuals from falling victim to fraudulent agents who exploit aspirations for better opportunities abroad. These agents employ deceptive tactics, leaving unaware passengers vulnerable to legal repercussions. Many victims unwittingly become embroiled in these schemes, often paying substantial sums derived from selling properties, mortgaging homes, or taking high-interest loans.
The investigations conducted by the IGI Airport Police have unearthed various fraudulent activities, including the production of fake departure and arrival stamps, the use of 'donkey routes' for illegal entry, and the creation of counterfeit visas, passports, work permits, and seaman documents, as reported. Particularly concerning are cases involving fake identities for foreign nationals, notably targeting Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas, alongside impersonation schemes.
In 2024 alone, significant arrests were made in cases involving counterfeit visas (19 agents), donkey route facilitation (11 agents), and passport tampering (12 agents). Other cases included arrests related to travelling on forged passports with similar facial features (24 agents), providing fake Indian passports for foreign nationals (21 agents), creating false travel histories (8 agents), and cases where passengers did not depart despite clearance (7 agents), as reported by Economic Times.
The proactive stance of the IGI Airport Police underscores their commitment to safeguarding national security and upholding the integrity of immigration processes. Through collaborative efforts and comprehensive strategies, the police continue to combat organized crime networks that threaten public trust in air travel safety. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to aid in curbing fraudulent practices effectively.
