Former PM Manmohan Singh's Legacy

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India's Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, marking the end of his illustrious political career in the Upper House after 33 years. Singh had been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991, representing Assam for five consecutive terms before shifting to Rajasthan in 2019.

Singh's last major intervention in Parliament was against the controversial demonetisation decision, which he criticized as an "organised loot and legalised plunder." In 2021, he spoke at an event titled "Pratheeksha 2030," highlighting the economic crisis caused by demonetisation and the resulting unemployment in the informal sector.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, Singh earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Economics from Panjab University before completing his Economic Tripos at Cambridge University in 1957. He later earned a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962. His extensive academic background laid the foundation for his influential roles in India's economic development.

Before entering politics, Dr. Singh served in various key government positions, including Economic Advisor to the Commerce Ministry in 1971, Chief Economic Advisor to the Finance Ministry, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. His expertise was instrumental in shaping India's economic policies during his tenure.
