Delhi Weather Update: 47°C Severe Heatwaves Coming Soon, Says IMD Forecast

Delhi's hot weather doesn't seem to be cooling down anytime soon. According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional centre in Delhi, the heatwaves are only going to get worse. Below are all the details you need to know.

Heatwave Condition Over Delhi:

Delhi Receives Severe Heatwaves

According to the weekly report from IMD, Delhi is still undergoing a heatwave, though mostly in isolated regions of the union territory. That is, those isolated regions may experience temperatures above 45°C. Even the minimum temperature for today and the next coming days will not go below 30°C

What's concerning is that in the coming days, specifically between 24 till 27 May, the heatwave will hit most places in Delhi. There will also be cases of severe heatwaves in isolated regions, which means some places in Delhi may experience temperatures above 47°C. These dates have been listed as a red alert, meaning that the IMD expects the worst, and readers should prepare for the same.

After that, from 28th onwards, IMD expects this trend of a regular heatwave across the region, with severe heatwaves in isolated places to continue. While these days are not marked with a red alert, readers should still remain vigilant against the heat.

Advice from IMD against the heatwaves:

IMD has given the following advice:

  1. Avoid heat exposure- Keep cool.
  2. Avoid dehydration.
  3. Drink sufficient water - Even if not thirsty.
  4. Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to keep yourself hydrated.

The Directorate Of Education In Delhi also put out a public circular on 20 May, stating all government schools are to be closed for summer vacation from 11 May till 30 June. The circular also requested private schools to follow the same in order to protect the children from severe heatwaves.

Other Forecasted Weather For Delhi:

There are no signs of rainfall hitting the region anytime soon as IMD predicts the weather will be dry till 28 May. There is also the expectation of strong winds between 25-35 km/h to be hitting Delhi for the next week or so. The lack of rain and hot winds can lead to an increased chance for a heatstroke. Stay vigilant and stay hydrated.
