Delhi Rain Update: IMD Predicts More Showers, Waterlogging And Cold Wave Grip Capital
Delhiis experiencing continued rainfall, with waterlogging and traffic jams reported across the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting more showers over the weekend, including in Noida, Gurugram, and other areas in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Persistent Rainfall and Waterlogging Across Delhi
Since Friday morning, Delhi has been witnessing non-stop rainfall, which has led to significant waterlogging in several areas. The rains have caused traffic disruptions, with commuters facing slow-moving vehicles and difficult driving conditions. The weather is expected to remain challenging, with intermittent light rain and thunderstorms forecasted for the morning hours of Saturday.
IMD's Forecast: More Showers and Fog
The IMD has predicted that Delhi will continue to experience cloudy skies and occasional rainfall on Saturday and Sunday. A spell of shallow fog or smog is likely to cover most areas of the city, particularly in the early mornings. The IMD has also issued a warning for a potential spell of smog or fog on Saturday evening, further adding to the weather challenges.
Record-Breaking December Rainfall
The rainfall in Delhi this December has broken historical records. The city recorded 42.8mm of rainfall by Friday, making it the fifth wettest December in the city's history. This is the heaviest rainfall in December since 1997, and the city's total rainfall for this month has surpassed the usual dry conditions typically associated with the season.
On Friday alone, the Safdarjung weather station reported 30.2mm of rain between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, marking the wettest single day in five years. Other weather stations across the city also recorded heavy rainfall, with Pusa reporting 35mm, Delhi University 39mm, and Lodhi Road 34.2mm of rain.
Weather Impact: Cold Wave Grips the City
The continuing rain has resulted in a significant dip in temperatures, contributing to the cold wave gripping the capital. With cloudy skies and rainfall, the usual dry chill of December has been replaced with colder conditions, affecting daily activities and outdoor plans for many residents.
What to Expect in the Coming Days
The IMD has advised residents and commuters to stay cautious, as waterlogging and traffic disruptions are expected to persist. With more rainfall forecasted over the weekend, it is important to take necessary precautions, including staying updated on weather alerts and planning travel accordingly.
Conclusion
Delhi is currently experiencing one of its wettest Decembers, with heavy rainfall continuing to affect the city. The cold wave and the likelihood of more rain in the coming days mean that residents should remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
