Delhi Weather Update: 'Orange' Warning Issued As Rains Disrupt Traffic And Visibility
Delhi Weather Update: An 'orange' warning has been issued in Delhi as heavy rains continued to lash several parts of the national capital and surrounding areas on Friday. The downpour has caused significant traffic disruptions, particularly in South, Central, and North Delhi. The weather department has forecast more showers throughout the day, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Heavy Rainfall in Key Areas

Rain began affecting the region around 2:30 AM, and by 11:30 AM, several weather stations recorded substantial rainfall:
- Safdarjung: 9.1 mm
- Palam: 8.4 mm
- Lodhi Road: 10.8 mm
- Delhi University: 11 mm
- Ridge: 9 mm
- Pusa: 9.5 mm
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes the rain to an active western disturbance interacting with easterly winds, causing light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across northwest and central India, including Delhi-NCR, as per media reports.
Temperature and Air Quality
The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 11°C, which is 2.8°C higher than normal. Despite the rain's cooling effect, the city's air quality remains a concern. At 9 AM, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 372, placing it in the 'very poor' category. This is a significant improvement from the previous day's AQI of 345, but still a cause for concern for residents, especially those with respiratory issues.
Ongoing Weather Alerts
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall for the remainder of the day, advising residents to remain prepared. The weather department issued an 'orange' warning, signaling that conditions may worsen and advising citizens to stay alert.
Impact on Traffic
The rain has already caused widespread traffic jams, especially in areas prone to waterlogging. Commuters are urged to plan their travel accordingly and avoid routes that are heavily affected by the rains.
