Residents have been advised to remain indoors where possible and exercise caution due to the risk of strong winds and lightning.
Temperature Dips With Rains
Rainfall has given much relief in weather conditions over the national capital.
Over the last several days, the outdoors had been uncomfortable due to high daytime temperature and humidity levels in Delhi. The rains on Monday helped to bring down the temperature and relief from the heat to some extent for commuters and residents.
The gale that went with the rain also helped to improve the air circulation so that the evening was considerably cooler.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Tuesday and Wednesday, warning that more rain and thunderstorms are likely over the next two days.
According to the weather department, the city may experience:
- Light to moderate rainfall
- Thunderstorms
- Lightning
- Gusty winds
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, as strong winds could uproot weak trees, damage temporary structures and disrupt traffic movement.
Low-lying areas may also experience temporary waterlogging if rainfall becomes intense.
Monsoon Likely to Arrive by July 4
The latest spell of rain comes just hours after the IMD announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Delhi-NCR by July 4.
Weather officials said conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon to advance further into northwestern India over the coming days.
Besides Delhi, the monsoon is also expected to cover parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh.
Private weather forecasting agency Skymet has also predicted a similar timeline for the arrival of the monsoon in the national capital.
Delay in Monsoon Arrival
The normal date for the southwest monsoon to reach Delhi is around June 27.
This year, however, the monsoon has been delayed due to its slower-than-usual advance across northern India.
Despite the delay, meteorologists remain optimistic that the monsoon will reach the national capital within the next few days.
With more showers forecast this week, Delhi-NCR is expected to experience cooler temperatures and more pleasant weather, bringing an end to the prolonged spell of intense summer heat.
