AIIMS Doctors End 11-Day Strike Following Supreme Court Appeal Amid Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has ended its eleven-day strike following an appeal from the Supreme Court of India.

The strike was launched in response to the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which triggered widespread outrage among the medical community, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The Supreme Court's intervention was pivotal in resolving the strike. The court, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, urged the medical community to resume their duties. The RDA, in its statement, expressed appreciation for the court's efforts and emphasized the need to return to work in the interest of public service and patient care.

The association also welcomed the directive that no punitive actions be taken against the protesting doctors and pledged to continue a "symbolic protest" outside working hours until justice is served, as reported by Hindustan Times. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to probe the case.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, is a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. The investigation aims to ensure a thorough and unbiased examination of the crime. While the strike has been called off, the RDA remains committed to advocating for justice and improved safety measures for healthcare workers, as per media reports.

The association plans to keep the issue in the public eye through ongoing symbolic protests and efforts to address systemic safety concerns for medical professionals.
