Banu Mushtaq Inaugurates Mysuru Dasara 2025, Performs Puja at Chamundeshwari Temple

Renowned author and Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq inaugurated the Mysuru Dasara festival 2025 by offering flowers and prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari at the hill temple. She was accompanied by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other dignitaries, and also participated in the Mahamangalarati before commencing the celebrations.

Her participation in the puja, in line with Hindu traditions, was seen as a strong response to critics who had questioned her appointment as the inaugurator of the state's most iconic cultural festival.

After the inauguration, Banu Mushtaq described the invitation as a great honour, recalling how a friend had once spoken of taking her to the temple. "Today, it was the government that gave me this opportunity, and I am deeply grateful," she said.

She also expressed hope that Mysuru Dasara would be recognised worldwide as a festival of peace and harmony, spreading the fragrance of unity far beyond India's borders.

Banu Mushtaq's selection as inaugurator drew criticism from opposition leaders, especially BJP MP Pratap Simha, who questioned her faith in Sanatan traditions and idol worship. The BJP even took the matter to court, challenging the Siddaramaiah-led government's decision.

Unfazed, Mushtaq embraced tradition by performing rituals at Chamundeshwari Temple, making it clear that she respected the customs associated with the festival.

Thanking Siddaramaiah for his support, she said:"Culture is our root, and harmony is our strength. Neither the sky nor the earth discriminates against anyone."

Her message struck a chord with many, portraying Mysuru Dasara as a celebration of inclusivity, peace, and cultural pride.

The Mysuru Dasara festival has long been regarded as a grand showcase of Karnataka's traditions. With Banu Mushtaq inaugurating the event this year, the celebration carries a strong message of unity across communities, reinforcing its reputation as the festival of peace.
