What's Cooking? Devendra Fadnavis Again Dials Eknath Shinde Ahead Of Maharashtra Govt Formation
As Maharashtra eagerly awaits the announcement of its new Chief Minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for a pivotal legislative party meeting scheduled for December 4, 2024, at 10 am at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan. This meeting is expected to finalize the Legislature Party Leader, who is likely to take up the Chief Ministerial mantle. This development follows hints from Eknath Shinde suggesting a BJP member will fill the Chief Ministerial post, though an official confirmation remains pending.
The meeting on December 4 marks a significant step in cementing the government's leadership after the Mahayuti alliance's triumphant electoral performance against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Despite the victory, the alliance has yet to conclude discussions on the power-sharing formula and the distribution of key ministerial roles. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani have been designated as central observers to facilitate the meeting's proceedings and ensure a smooth leadership selection process.'

In light of the upcoming government formation, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar has ventured to Delhi to engage with the BJP's senior leadership. His objective is to hash out the details of cabinet formation and ministry assignments, indicating that negotiations are in full swing. These discussions are an extension of the ongoing internal dialogues among alliance members, who are striving to reconcile differing priorities regarding the allocation of significant ministries.
The ceremony to swear in the new Chief Minister is planned for December 5 at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, with expectations of attendance by prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This event is set against the backdrop of a somewhat tumultuous phase of government formation talks. The discussions have encountered obstacles, such as health concerns related to Eknath Shinde, which resulted in the delay of crucial meetings aimed at finalizing government formation.
Among the frontrunners for the Chief Ministerial role is Devendra Fadnavis, a former Chief Minister and a key figure within the BJP, who enjoys widespread support within the party following the electoral success. Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde, the acting Chief Minister, is seen as a probable candidate for the Deputy Chief Minister position. However, speculation regarding Eknath Shinde's son, Shrikant Shinde, stepping into the role of Deputy Chief Minister has been quelled by Shrikant himself. He has expressed a lack of interest in seeking state-level power, choosing instead to focus on his constituency and the organizational work of the party.
This array of developments underscores the complexity of the political dynamics in Maharashtra following the Mahayuti alliance's electoral victory. The discussions and negotiations underway are critical to shaping the state's future leadership and governance direction. As such, the outcome of the December 4 legislative party meeting is highly anticipated, with significant implications for both the BJP and the broader political landscape of Maharashtra.
