Vasai Demolition Drive: VVCMC Targets Remaining 32 Illegal Buildings; Residents Evacuated
The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) will commence demolition of 32 unauthorised buildings in Vasai East today, Thursday, as part of an ongoing operation to remove illegal constructions in Agarwal Nagar, as per a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This action is set to take place over four days- January 23, 24, 27, and 28-following the issuance of evacuation notices to residents earlier this week.
Supreme Court Ruling Prompted Action

The Supreme Court had directed the demolition of 41 unauthorised buildings in October last year. These structures, constructed on reserved land in Agarwal Nagar, were deemed illegal. In November, seven of these buildings, categorised as highly dangerous, were brought down during the initial phase of the operation.
The remaining demolitions were delayed as residents refused to vacate the buildings by the initial deadline of 31 December. Civic officials have now decided to proceed with the demolition despite resistance, supported by a strong police presence to ensure the process is carried out smoothly and without incident.
Prohibitory Orders And Police Deployment
To maintain law and order during the demolition, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Purnima Chougule announced the imposition of prohibitory orders in the area. The restrictions will be in effect from midnight on Thursday to midnight on Friday, aiming to prevent any disruptions. Approximately 400 police personnel have been deployed to enforce the orders and assist with the demolition process.
Residents Seek Intervention
On Tuesday, women residents of the affected buildings met Nalasopara MLA Rajan Naik to plead for a halt to the demolition. The MLA assured them that he would explore options for rehabilitation in compliance with the Supreme Court's ruling. However, no immediate relief has been reported so far.
Background And Timeline
The VVCMC began the crackdown on unauthorised buildings after the Supreme Court's directive. The first phase of the operation in November targeted the most hazardous structures, ensuring public safety. Despite delays caused by residents' resistance, the corporation has now resolved to complete the task and clear the reserved land as per the court's mandate.
The demolition, which will unfold over the next few days, marks a significant step in addressing unauthorised construction in Vasai East. Civic authorities and law enforcement remain vigilant to ensure the safety of all involved and prevent any untoward incidents.
