Pune–Mumbai Deccan Queen: From Royal Ride To Rough Journey? Heat, Filth, And No View

Passengers of the Pune-Mumbai Deccan Queen have expressed growing concern over the poor condition of the train's Vistadome coach, according to a mid-day report. Known for offering scenic views during the journey, the coach is now being criticised for its lack of cleanliness, blocked views, rising heat, and declining food service.

The Deccan Queen, which has been running since 1930, holds a special place in the hearts of many travellers. With its long-standing reputation and loyal passengers, even minor issues usually receive quick attention. But several commuters now say that the Vistadome coach meant to provide a premium travel experience is being neglected.

Pradyuman Maheshwari, a senior media professional and regular commuter, said that the coach needs better upkeep, especially since ticket prices are quite high. "The railways must look after this coach properly. For the price we pay, the facilities fall short," he said.

He also pointed out that Train 12124 no longer departs from platform 1 at Pune station. "This is Pune's pride. It should be on platform 1. At the very least, crowding can be controlled with proper ticket checks," he said. On a lighter note, he joked that the change helps passengers get some morning exercise while walking to the new platforms.

Speaking about the Vistadome coach itself, he said that while the views from Pune to Mumbai are beautiful, the return journey is disappointing. "On the way back, the coach is placed right behind the engine, so the view is blocked. To make it worse, it usually stops at open areas of the CSMT platform, which becomes a problem during rain. The coach isn't connected to the rest of the train, so passengers can't move to other coaches to find shelter."

He also added that the condition of the washrooms is very poor and not suitable for a premium service. "It's hard to believe this is the same Vistadome experience that is advertised," he said.

Food service is another major concern. Mr Maheshwari said that the quality has dropped over time. "IRCTC should either allow private firms to handle catering or return to the old system where railways managed it. At present, passengers have to wait until Lonavala for the attendant to bring food from the pantry coach."

Another traveller, Jatin Bhavsar from Pune, highlighted the problem of heat inside the coach. "The glass roof and wide windows trap heat, especially in the train returning to Pune. Since the coach sits in the yard all day, it gets very hot before the journey begins. Also, the windows are not cleaned regularly, which spoils the whole experience. For a Vistadome coach, clean glass is a must," he said.

What The Railways Said

Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, Dr Swapnil Nila, responded to the complaints and said that the Deccan Queen is a premium train. "We try to maintain it well, especially the Vistadome coach," he said.

On the change of platform at Pune, he explained that platform 1 is now used only for trains with more than 20 coaches. Since the Deccan Queen has 16, it has been moved to other platforms. "Lifts and escalators are available to help passengers reach these platforms," he said.

About the coach being at the uncovered end of the CSMT platform, Dr Nila said that work is going on to extend platforms and improve facilities for longer trains. He also mentioned that the coach is placed behind the engine on the return journey due to operational needs. "It is not connected to other coaches to avoid crowding," he added.

He assured passengers that the complaints about food quality would be discussed with IRCTC.

It also has wide doors for passengers with disabilities and a gallery for scenic viewing. However, travellers say the actual journey experience is currently not living up to these promises.
