Palm Beach Road Extension Update: Airoli Link Construction Underway; Environmental Permissions Secured

The long-awaited Palm Beach Road extension project from Ghansoli to Airoli has officially begun, following the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) securing all necessary environmental permissions, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This project is significant as it involves construction in an area with existing mangroves.

The original plan by CIDCO included building a 21.12-kilometre road from Belapur to Airoli, which would connect to the Mulund-Thane-Mumbai route. However, progress was stalled after completing the 19.20-kilometre stretch from Belapur to Ghansoli, as the remaining 2 kilometres of construction fell within the mangrove zone.

To address environmental concerns, the project has been revised. Instead of the initially planned 2-kilometre road, it will now extend to the Airoli-Mulund Creek bridge, making it a total of 3.47 kilometres. NMMC has proposed building a 1.9-kilometre bridge to avoid disturbing the mangroves and has also initiated tree plantation efforts in Palghar to comply with environmental regulations. The necessary permissions were obtained from the forest department, the mangroves conservation committee, and the high court.

"Work on the project has started with all environmental permissions in place, and soil testing is complete. We have instructed the contractor to finish the work by September next year," stated Shirish Aradwad, the city engineer in the HT report.

The project is expected to cost Rs 550 crore, with CIDCO covering half of the expenses. Once completed, the road will provide a direct and efficient route from Airoli to other parts of the city. It will also help alleviate congestion on the busy Thane-Belapur (TB) road, especially during peak hours.

Additionally, the new road will link to the Airoli-Mulund bridge area, allowing drivers to access the upcoming Airoli-Katai route and travel towards Kalyan, Badlapur, Ambernath, and Murbad.

Furthermore, this road is an essential component of the regional connectivity plan to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and will also be part of the Coastal Road project connecting Thane to Sanpada.
