Mumbai Transport Update: Rickshaw, Taxi Fares Likely To Rise Soon – Check New Rates
Mumbaikars may soon have to shell out more for their rickshaw and taxi rides, as a proposal to increase the minimum fares is currently under review by the Transport Department, according to a Lokmat report. The suggestion for a fare hike, submitted by rickshaws and taxi drivers' associations, proposes a rise of Rs 3 for rickshaws and Rs 4 for taxis.
The current fares, unchanged since October 2022, have been a point of contention for drivers, who cite rising fuel and CNG prices as major challenges. Additionally, the growing competition from app-based rickshaw and taxi services has further strained their income. In light of these factors, the drivers' associations have urged the authorities to implement fare revisions as recommended by the Khatua Committee.

If the proposal is approved, the minimum fare for rickshaws will increase from Rs 23 to Rs 26, while taxis will see a jump from Rs 28 to Rs 31. The Transport Department is expected to make a decision on the matter later this week.
However, the potential fare hike has sparked mixed reactions among Mumbai residents. While drivers argue that the increase is necessary to sustain their livelihoods, many citizens feel that even a slight fare increase would strain their daily budgets. One resident voiced their concerns, stating, "It would be wrong to increase the minimum fare by just Rs 3. This will make commuting less affordable for the common people."
As the city awaits the Transport Department's decision, the debate over balancing the needs of drivers and commuters continues to gain momentum.
