Mumbai School Holiday News: As heavy monsoon rains continue to lash the city, one question dominates the minds of parents and students: Will schools remain closed on August 20?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already declared a two-day holiday for all schools and colleges on August 18 and 19, after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert. With downpours showing no sign of easing and the forecast extending until August 21, uncertainty looms large over a possible third day of closures.

While the BMC has yet to issue an official statement, neighboring regions - including Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar - have already announced a holiday on August 20, prioritizing student safety amid flooded streets and transport disruptions.

Parents in Mumbai say the lack of clarity is adding to their anxiety. "We understand weather can change quickly, but children's safety comes first. The BMC should announce tomorrow's decision sooner," said a parent from Dadar.

The concern is not unfounded. On August 19, Mumbai recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in 11 hours, leading to waterlogging in Santacruz, Vikhroli, and Juhu. Train services were delayed, and a monorail train near Mysore Colony even stalled for three hours, stranding over 200 passengers before rescue teams intervened.

For now, Mumbai families wait for the civic body's next update. If the rains persist, most expect schools will remain closed on August 20 - extending what has already been an unexpected midweek break.
