Mumbai Railway Upgrade: ₹16,241 Crore Plan Includes AC Locals, New Lines, And Connectivity Boost

In a significant push to modernise Mumbai's overburdened suburban railway system, Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹16,241 crore aimed at upgrading infrastructure, easing congestion, and increasing train frequency to better serve daily commuters. The announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who underscored the urgent need to revamp the city's lifeline and improve the travel experience for millions of Mumbaikars.

As part of its commitment to boosting regional connectivity and infrastructure, Indian Railways has launched 12 large-scale infrastructure projects to address long-standing issues on existing lines. These projects are set to transform the way commuters navigate the suburban network, offering improved services and greater safety.

Here's a detailed breakdown of the 12 sanctioned projects along with their respective routes, distances, and estimated costs:

  • CSMT-Kurla Lines 5 & 6 - 17.5 km, ₹891 crore
  • Harbour Line Extension from Goregaon to Borivali - 7 km, ₹826 crore
  • Borivali-Virar 5th & 6th Line - 26 km, ₹2,184 crore
  • Virar-Dahanu Road 3rd & 4th Line - 64 km, ₹3,587 crore
  • Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor - 29.6 km, ₹2,782 crore
  • Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Suburban Link - 3.3 km, ₹476 crore
  • Kalyan-Asangaon 4th Line - 32 km, ₹1,759 crore
  • Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd & 4th Line - 14 km, ₹1,510 crore
  • Kalyan-Kasara 3rd Line - 67 km, ₹793 crore
  • Naigaon-Juichandra Double Line - 6 km, ₹176 crore
  • Nilaje-Kopar Double Line - 5 km, ₹338 crore

In addition to these infrastructure projects, Indian Railways has also announced the introduction of 238 new air-conditioned local trains, each equipped with automatic doors. These upgraded trains are designed to enhance commuter safety, particularly by reducing accidents and injuries related to overcrowding.

With this extensive upgrade plan, Indian Railways reaffirms its focus on delivering a safer, faster, and more reliable transport system for Mumbai's growing population. The initiatives reflect a long-term strategy to decongest existing rail routes and offer a more seamless commuting experience in one of the busiest urban railway networks in the world.
